  • USA Rice Carves Out a Niche in Korea with New Products

    In the latest of a slew of new food and snack products that use U.S.-grown rice is a new convenience package of “Army Stew,” a Korean-style spicy soup containing kimchi, sausage, ham, rice cakes, and ramen noodles. The rice cakes are produced using rice flour originating from U.S. rice. Many snacks and food items containing rice flour have emerged on the market here within the last year. Full story

    It’s been a long journey with too many delays, but the government of Colombia looks close to removing longstanding import restrictions on U.S. paddy. Colombian plant health officials have acknowledged to their U.S. counterparts that the fungal disease Tilletia Horrida is present in Colombia. The presence of this disease in U.S. rice country has been used as an excuse by Colombia to restrict imports of U.S. rough rice to only the port of Barranquilla and processing in surrounding mills, and to require fumigation of the cargo before shipment.     U.S. rice ending stocks for 2016/17 are lowered 3 million cwt on increased exports; at 49.1 million cwt, these would still be the largest all rice ending stocks since 1986/87. The 3-million-cwt export increase is all rough rice, which is record large at 46 million cwt, but split with 2 million for long-grain and 1 million for medium- and short-grain. Full story
