  • Japan Steps Up Utilization of Rice in Animal Feeds

    Japan, faced with an oversupply of rice, is moving to encourage use of rice, both domestically produced and imported, as livestock feed. According to a report from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, last year Japan set a record for rice utilization in animal feeds, exceeding 1 million metric tons (1,173,000 MT), and surpassing the utilization rate of sorghum for the first time. In the period October 1, 2015 – March 31, 2016 rice utilization in compound feeds has averaged 5.3 percent, already 0.3 percent higher than total compound feed formulation for all of last year.     In a swarm of legislative activity by Congress over the past three days, Rep. Rick Crawford (R-AR) last night withdrew his amendment to the House’s FY 2017 Financial Services Appropriations Bill that would have removed the restrictions on private financing by U.S. businesses for the sale of agricultural products to Cuba. Crawford’s effort to improve the underlying legislation had gained significant bipartisan support amongst several Members of Congress over the last two weeks since the amendment was first introduced.   • U.S. Rice Looks to Answer Call on USDA Food Assistance Grants

    Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced its FY2016 food assistance grants. USDA will provide U.S. commodities and financial and technical support to food-insecure communities in Africa, Asia, and Central America through the Food for Progress Program and McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition (McGovern-Dole) Program, benefitting more than 6.1 million vulnerable people worldwide. RMA Chairman Robert Trahan peppered his remarks each day with facts about historic events from 1899 and attendees were encouraged to visit the RMA History Booth, set up in the Exhibit Hall, featuring old convention guides dating back to the 1920s and a photo gallery of past chairmen.
