ARLINGTON, VA – On
Episode 59 of
The Rice Stuff podcast, hosts Michael Klein and Lesley Dixon wrap up the 2022 USA Rice Outlook Conference in Austin, Texas, and offer a behind-the-scenes look at some of the conference highlights.
Klein caught up with Milo Hamilton, author and president of First Grain, Inc., and John Anderson, strategic risk and marketing analyst, after their presentation, “Rice in a Post Global World.” Covering everything from Russia’s war with Ukraine to India’s unfair manipulation of the global rice market, Hamilton and Anderson discuss the uncomfortable realities of modern international trade and how this instability may affect the domestic rice industry.
“Right now, we’re in a very disrupted world with no prospect of becoming easier,” said Hamilton. “Proximity and security are going to be more important than price in this post-global situation.”
Meanwhile, Dixon tracked down National Rice Month Scholarship winner Cole Skelley to hear about his whirlwind visit to the Outlook Conference. Skelley, whose family thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Austin, was honored at the Annual Awards Luncheon, where his grand prize video submission played before an audience of some of the rice industry’s best and brightest. After touring the Exhibit Hall, listening to keynote speeches, and networking with rice VIPs, Skelley got the full Outlook experience.
In this episode, Dr. Steve Linscombe also provides a summary of the many groundbreaking research topics presented on the Rice Foundation Innovation Stage and the Corteva Agriscience Stage, ranging from organic rice farming and sustainability to invasive pest control.
“This year’s conference was a resounding success, and while it’s impossible to include all our favorite parts, this episode gives a taste of all the great things Outlook has to offer,” said Klein. “And if you want the full picture, you’re just going to have to register for next year’s Outlook Conference.”
