ARLINGTON, VA – Rice in the United States got its start in South Carolina before there even were states to be united.  In fact, some know Charleston as “the city rice built.”  On the latest episode of The Rice Stuff podcast, co-hosts Lesley Dixon, Michael Klein, and Dr. Steve Linscombe talk about rice’s history and the current state of Palmetto State rice.

Brian Ward, president of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation and assistant professor and rice production specialist at Clemson University, joins the podcast to share his insights and talk about rice extension services there and land use in the region.

Author and University of South Carolina professor and Chair of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation David Shields fills in the plentiful gaps in the hosts’ knowledge of South Carolina’s rich rice history, including the mysterious origins of the well-known and misunderstood Carolina Gold variety.

Adding a commercial perspective is Don Quattlebaum, rice farmer and owner of White House Farms of Georgetown, South Carolina, who talked about his family’s work to bring South Carolina rice to market.

All that plus shedding some light on the Louisiana rice measurement of “barrels.”

New episodes of The Rice Stuff are published on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month and can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocketcast, and online at www.thericestuffpodcast.com.
