  • TPP Agreement Signed, Rice Concerns Remain

    Trade Ministers from 12 nations signed the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement yesterday (Feb. 4 local time). U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman joined officials from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam at the signing, which launches the formal start of the ratification process in many of the TPP countries.     News in South Korea today is that 30 tons of rice was loaded in containers at Gunsan port on January 29 headed to China, where the rice will be sold in Lotte Mart stores in Shanghai. Another 70 tons will follow in February with a total of 2,000 MT expected to be exported to China this year. Full story

    Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released their 2014 review of pesticide residue levels on produce, grain, salmon, and infant formula, and found that 99 percent of the samples had residue levels below the EPA limit.     Mark Isbell of North Little Rock, Arkansas, was named 2016 Rice Farmer of the Year at the Cotton & Rice Conference here. Isbell is part of a multi-generation rice farm in central Arkansas focused on zero-grade farming and rice behind rice rotation. He earned both a BA and an MA from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he teaches part time. Full story

    This past November and December, USA Rice participated in the Redner’s HealthCents program to encourage shoppers to ‘think rice’ during the holiday season. Redner’s dietitians promoted U.S.-grown rice in the company’s HealthCents magazine and weekly circular as well as in stores through displays and recipe demonstrations (see USA Rice Daily, November 23, 2015). The combined promotional activities at the Mid-Atlantic supermarket chain reached an estimated 1.2 million shoppers and contributed to a 47.6 percent lift in U.S. rice sales. Full story
