  • Tax Extender Bill Impacts Farming Communities

    WASHINGTON, DC -- On Tuesday, the Senate passed H.R. 5771, the Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014. The $42 billion tax package applies tax breaks to the 2014 tax year, retroactively and until December 31, 2014. Included in the legislation was an extension for Section 179, which according to Senator John Hoeven (R-ND) is "one of the most important provisions in the act" and provides a "depreciation and expensing provision for small businesses," including farms. Section 179, which has been reinstated to the original limit of $500,000, allows small business owners to immediately depreciate 100 percent of a capital purchase, avoiding the hassle of depreciation over time and simultaneously lowering taxable income.     USA Rice extends deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deborah Marie Warshaw, 55, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, who passed away on December 12. Throughout her three-year battle with cancer, Debbie inspired many with her faith, strength, and courage. Survivors include her husband, James (Jamie) Warshaw, CEO of Farmers Rice Milling Company and a past chairman of the USA Rice Millers' Association and the USA Rice Federation, three children and one grandchild.   • USTR Appeals WTO October COOL Rule

    WASHINGTON, DC -- Last Friday, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) filed an appeal to the World Trade Organization's (WTO) October ruling that the U.S. Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) rule was a violation of United States' WTO obligations. This means that the WTO's appellate body has 60 days to report on the appeal and, based on the outcome of that report, WTO arbitration could begin as early as April 2015 if the United States remains out of compliance and Canada and Mexico continue to seek trade retaliation.   • Taiwan Opens Market for U.S. Long Grain Rice

    TAIPEI, TAIWAN -- The American Institute of Taiwan's Agricultural Affairs Office reported that Taiwan authorities have lifted the longstanding ban on U.S. long grain rice. Taiwan imposed an import ban on U.S. long grain rice immediately after the LibertyLink® incident in August 2006. Since then, the issue has been raised in several bilateral engagements by the U.S. side, both technically and under the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement annual meetings. Full story
  • USA Rice Offers Assessment of Neonicotinoid Seed Treatments

    ARLINGTON, VA -- At the request of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the USA Rice Federation recently submitted information to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Pollinator Health Task Force on the value of a class of seed treatments used on rice seeds. The seed treatment in question is neonicotinoids, a class of insecticides introduced two decades ago and adopted by farmers around the world because of their effectiveness in controlling harmful and destructive crop pests.
