    Last week Asiha Grigsby, USA Rice manager of international promotion, and USA Rice contractors here, Ernesto Baron and Chef Javier Rodríguez, met with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Counselor Todd Drennan, and Attaché Sean Cox for a roundtable discussion of market access and promotional activities in the region. Mr. Drennan led the group in a conversation exploring the opportunities and challenges for U.S. rice as compared to corn - the most consumed grain in the region. Full story

    House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway (R-TX) introduced his draft of the 2018 Farm Bill, formally known as H.R. 2, The Agriculture & Nutrition Act of 2018, yesterday after months of negotiations. The bill’s nutrition and food stamp provisions are controversial, and have actually divided the Committee along partisan lines, but the other titles reflect the good work that Chairman Conaway and Ranking Member Collin Peterson (D-MN) have done to craft a strong bill that supports farmers who are facing trade uncertainty and who have weathered consecutive years of down prices.     Yesterday, USA Rice joined a select panel of commodity organizations to brief House Agriculture Committee Members’ staff on U.S. food aid programs and the central role the U.S. agriculture industry plays in supporting those programs. Specifically, the groups warned that any attempts to reduce program funding, or shift funding away from the procurement of U.S. commodities and products would diminish Congressional support of the programs by farm state lawmakers and would be strongly opposed.     Exports of Brazilian rice to the United States have jumped nearly 60 percent in the first two months of 2018 over the same time period last year. On the heels of that news, Brazil has rebooted two dormant rice support policies that USA Rice says appear to be being used to push their export prices below production costs in direct violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) obligations.     U.S. 2017/18 rice ending stocks are raised 4.1 million cwt to 33.3 million, mostly on decreased exports. These ending stock levels still remain below the 5-year average. The 4-million-cwt decrease in exports is divided evenly between long-grain and medium- and short-grain. Rough and milled rice exports are also lowered by 3 and 1 million cwt, respectively. Full story

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will make disaster payments of up to $2.36 billion, as provided by Congress, to help America’s farmers and ranchers recover from hurricanes and wildfires. The funds are available as part of the new 2017 Wildfires and Hurricanes Indemnity Program (2017 WHIP). Sign-up for the new program, authorized by the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018, will begin no later than July 16. Full story

    In late March, the Brewers Association released its 2018 Beer Style Guidelines, with rice specifically noted as a typical or recommended ingredient in seven styles: American-style lager and light lager; American-style amber light lager; American-style pilsener; contemporary American-style pilsener; international-style pilsener; and Australasian, Latin American or tropical-style light lager.
