Market Access & Promotion

Rice is one of the world’s most widely consumed grains and the primary dietary staple for more than half the world’s population.  American rice farmers grow 9 million tons of rice each year, just more than half of which is exported to more than 120 countries.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Market Access Program (MAP), Foreign Market Development (FMD) Program, and Agricultural Trade Promotion Program (ATP) help the rice industry open foreign markets and promote our products abroad, with a proven track record of success in more than 30 overseas markets.  Learn more about our international market promotions below.

U.S. rice -- always on the sunny side
Mar 31, 2025
KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN – Last month, USA Rice showcased mochi (sweet rice cakes) and kombucha (fermented beverage) made from U.S. rice at the Sunshine Island Vibe Fest, organized by the Kaohsiung City Government and stationed at the Central Park, a high-traffic spot in Kaohsiung City.  Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s third largest populated city and the country’s largest port.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Trade Office (USDA/ATO) coordinated the two-day event, that attracted nearly 140,000 people, to showcase U.S. products to local consumers.

“Collaborating with the ATO is a great way to promote the benefits of U.S. rice,” said Steven Chu, USA Rice manager of Asia promotions.  “USA Rice interacted with 3,000 visitors introducing them to high quality U.S. rice and its premium texture and flavor leading to more than 700 rice products being sold.”

Taiwan was the United States’ fifteenth largest export market last year with more than $50 million of U.S. rice destined to the island.
