Market Access & Promotion

Rice is one of the world’s most widely consumed grains and the primary dietary staple for more than half the world’s population.  American rice farmers grow 9 million tons of rice each year, just more than half of which is exported to more than 120 countries.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Market Access Program (MAP), Foreign Market Development (FMD) Program, and Agricultural Trade Promotion Program (ATP) help the rice industry open foreign markets and promote our products abroad, with a proven track record of success in more than 30 overseas markets.  Learn more about our international market promotions below.

Find out what consumers in Latin America want and what the U.S. rice industry is doing to accommodate them
Apr 09, 2024
ARLINGTON, VA – Not all rice consumer preferences are the same, and in Latin America, an important destination for U.S.-grown rice, consumers have different criteria for evaluating rice.  The fact the U.S. and Central American rice industries haven’t seen eye-to-eye for years has resulted in shrinking market share for the U.S. in some spots.  But the industry is hoping to turn the tide.

On Episode 88 of The Rice Stuff, USA Rice Chief Operating Officer Sarah Moran sits in to explain market differences and what USA Rice is encouraging the U.S. industry to do.

One of the initiatives is a closer working relationship with FECARROZ, the Central American Rice Federation.  Asiha Grigsby, USA Rice senior director of international promotion for the Western Hemisphere, recently sat down with FECARROZ President Kamal Dieck in Washington to talk about his vision for trade between the regions and the popular and successful U.S. Rice Quality Symposium that is part of the USA Rice Outlook Conference each December.

Then, Dr. Adam Famoso, director of the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station at the Louisiana State University AgCenter in Crowley, Louisiana, stops by to talk about the successes he has had establishing new varieties for this market and what rice research can do to improve the trade.

New episodes of The Rice Stuff are published on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month and can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and online at www.thericestuffpodcast.com.
