Meet U.S. Rice Farmers
Kirk Satterfield
Bolivar County
Multi-Generational Farmer
One Dish Broccoli & Mushroom Bake
Multi-generational for the Satterfield family means two things: that their family’s farming tradition has been passed down from grandfather, to father, and now to son, but also that several generations of their family work together on the current operation. Kirk pitches in alongside his father and brother, a niece and a nephew, and a great crew who all join forces to grow rice and soybeans in Bolivar County in the beautiful Mississippi Delta.
Satterfield Farms raised its first rice crop in 1974 and has grown rice on the farm every year since. “My father has a great passion for rice that he passed along to all of our family and I am proud to continue in the groundwork he laid. He and many others in the Delta strived so very hard to get our industry in the position it is today.”
The rice industry is in a good position moving forward in large part because people in the rice industry, like Kirk, don’t just farm but also are engaged with legislators on the local, state, and federal level, making sure policy makers understand exactly how decisions made far from the fields where our food is grown can have a major impact on the way it’s produced.
“I am proud to be a part of that effort and all that it affords,” says Kirk. “Involvement in USA Rice as the voice for our industry is just as much a part of farming as raising a crop to feed the world. Consumers benefit from our hard work, in the fields, in the mills, on food safety standards, sustainability efforts, and so much more.”
